Todorov thus identifies a second moment in Las Casas' thinking and actions, that of old age, when the Dominican friar even justifies human sacrifices. In doing so, Las Casas ended up adopting a new position, introducing what could be called "perspectivism" within religion. Not only that, but Las Casas, according to Todorov, would renounce Christianity as the only true religion, that is, as the only path to salvation, admitting the existence of a plurality of religions, all legitimate: Although he affirms the existence of a single god, Las Casas does not a priori favour the Christian way of reaching him. Equality is no longer established at the expense of identity; it is not an absolute value: everyone has the right to approach God in the way that suits them. There is no longer one true God (ours), but a coexistence of possible universes: if someone considers him to be true... Las Casas surreptitiously left theology and began to practise a kind of religious anthropology; which, in this context, is really subversive, because it seems that, by taking on a discourse about religion, he took a first step towards abandoning religious discourse itself71 .
