Orthodoxy holds that Judaism can only be passed on through one’s mother, whereas the Reform and Conservative movements accept that it is enough if someone’s father is Jewish. So if an actor is cast as Tevye but only their father is Jewish, or they have had a Reform conversion, from an Ortho-dox perspective they aren’t Jewish. The obvious solution in the case of theater is just to go with someone’s cultural affiliation, whether they are considered Jewish or Jew-ish.
