However fake news was a problem even back then. And the Dominican Order (also known affectionately as the Hounds of God (I’m being sarcastic, this was meant negatively.)) slandered Cortez and other Conquistadores accusing them of comiting horrible crimes against the natives.

Why?

Well because the crimes detailed by the Dominican Order were horrifying enough that even the, by no means squeamish, nobles of the time thought it was a bit too much so they disowned Cortez and gave everything he and his men had fought and bled for to the Dominican Order instead.

Fun fact: Part of the reasoning behind this was that the Dominican Order said that the natives had souls so anything bad done to them was a Sin. Their sollution to this was to import African Slaves to the colonies and work them to death since they didn’t have souls.

So you can thank the Domincan Order for the Transatlantic Slavetrade.

This slander and libel is repeated to this day and as a result, poor old Hernan Cortez who was nothing but a poor country boy trying to make his fortune got stuck with one of the worst reps in history.
